About the Nisga’a Village of Gitwinksihlkw: Place of the Lizards

Welcome to Gitwinksihlkw, a vibrant and culturally rich Nisga’a village nestled in the heart of the Nass Valley in northwestern British Columbia. For countless generations, our people, the Nisga’a, have called this land home, forging a deep connection with the natural world and a strong, enduring culture.

Our History and Heritage:

Our story is one of resilience, strength, and a deep commitment to our heritage. Gitwinksihlkw, meaning "Place of the Lizards," has faced both hardship and triumph. We remember the volcanic lava flows of the 1700s that buried our ancestral community, and the fires that once consumed our village. Yet, from these challenges, our ancestors emerged with an unwavering spirit, a commitment to self-reliance, and a determination to preserve our traditions. We are proud to be the only Nisga’a village that has hosted a Salvation Army Church since its establishment in 1924. A landmark in our village is the Gitwinksihlkw Suspension Bridge, a testament to our ingenuity and a vital link connecting our community across the Nass River.

Today, we honour our past by upholding the wisdom of our Simgigat (chiefs), Sigidimhaanak’ (nobility), and Elders, who guide us in preserving our Ayuuk (Nisga’a laws and customs) and Adaawak’ (oral histories). We strive to live by the principles of Sayt Kil’im Goot (one heart, one path, one nation), ensuring that we share our resources and responsibilities equally.

Our Community Today:

Gitwinksihlkw is a tight-knit, supportive community where culture thrives. We are proud of our many community members who have pursued higher education, bringing new skills and knowledge back to our village. We are committed to fostering a strong sense of belonging, encouraging community engagement, and providing opportunities for personal and professional growth.
